 Aquatics Program
A Summary of Benefits Derived from
Aquatics-based Exercise
Benefits to orthopedic and arthritic clients:
- Buoyancy allows for less stress on joints
and bones for healing
- Buoyancy allows for early weight bearing
- Improvement of ROM and strength sooner with
less pain secondary to ease of movement in water
- Hydrostatic pressure and buoyancy may
stimulate proprioceptors, therefore improving movement patterns
- Encourage stabilizing contractions of the
trunk and weight bearing extremities during functionally oriented
movements
- Plyometrics can be performed in deep water
- Jet motion of water provides for tissue
relaxation as well as resistance for strengthening exercises
- Various therapeutic procedures adapted from
land can be performed easier in the water
- Warmth of water increases relaxation and
decreases pain
- Improves cardiovascular endurance due to
decreased cardiac demands during workouts
- Decreased swelling secondary to increased
circulation and hydrostatic pressure
Benefits to Neurological Clients:
- Buoyancy slows patients' loss of balance
allowing for increased reaction time in balance challenges
- Hydrostatic pressure and buoyancy may
stimulate proprioceptors, therefore improving movement patterns
- Neurological conditions do well in gravity
reduced environments as it encourages early assumption of upright
positions and independent control of activities as soon as possible
- Aquatic environment assists in acquisition
of walking, transferring and reaching skills
- The ease of movement in the water allows
individuals a wide range of endurance levels train for cardiorespiratory
endurance
- Decreases abnormal tone because of neutral
warmth of water
- Can effect positive self-esteem as disabling
conditions are less apparent in the water
