Upper Extremity/Hand Program

Hand and upper extremity injuries require the specialized care and knowledge of a highly trained Occupational and/or Physical Therapist. The staff at Northeast Rehabilitation Hospital is trained to treat the following injuries/disorders:

  • Fractures
  • Amputations/Traumatic Injuries
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Tendon/Nerve Injuries
  • Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy
  • Arthritis
  • Soft Tissue Injuries
  • Multiple Trauma
  • Repetitive Motion Syndrome
  • Arthroplasty

Complete evaluation and treatment is provided by a fully qualified, licensed therapist. The therapist works closely with the patient and referring physician to set goals and establish a plan of treatment that will restore maximum functional use of the extremity.

The treatment of a hand injury begins with a complete evaluation. Depending on an individual's diagnosis, the treatment plan would include any of the following procedures or modalities:

  • Range of Motion/Stretching
  • Edema Management
  • Customized Splinting
  • Scar Management
  • Casting
  • Exercise Programs
  • Desensitization
  • Home Programs
  • Re-education
  • Activities of Daily Living
  • Joint Mobilization
  • Work Simulation
  • Patient Education
  • Paraffin
  • BTE Work Simulator
  • Transcutaneous Electrical Stimulation (TENS)
  • Hot/Cold Packs
  • Adaptive Equipment
  • Ultrasound
  • Functional Electrical Stimulation (F.E.S.)
  • Referral

All patients must be referred by a physician. The physician will receive an initial evaluation report and progress reports while the patient is in therapy. A final status report will be sent when the patient is discharged.
