Spasticity / Dystonia Clinic

This clinic is designed to assess and treat individuals (ages 12 and above) with functionally significant disorders of neuromuscular tone due to conditions of the brain or spinal cord. Typical issues responsible for referrals include:

  • Deformity and impaired limb control complicating hemiparesis,

Evaluations consider the primary complaint of the individual, the history of their disorder as well as any previous therapeutic interventions, findings of an examination and all potential treatment options available. The types of treatment options within our 'tool chest' include:

  • Physical methods (exercise, thermal, casting/splinting, orthotics);
  • Oral Medication;
  • Trial ("Test") nerve blocks using local anesthetic;
  • Chemoneurolysis with Phenol ("Nerve Block/Motor Point Injections")
  • Botulinum toxin ("Botox" Injection)
  • Botulinum toxin therapy is offered to amputees with excessive sweating at the interface with their prosthesis.
