Pain is a diverse, multidimensional problem, and as varied as the individuals who suffer from it. The Pain Management Center at Northeast Rehabilitation Hospital is designed to meet the physical, psychosocial and functional needs of the persons served. The goal is to increase function and to diminish pain and its influence over day to day activities. The treatment team is goal oriented, well coordinated, integrating physical, social-behavioral and educational interventions. Patients are encouraged to assume maximal responsibility for their own health care, goal setting and achievement. The program emphasizes returning patients to work or other productive life activities, and reducing dependence upon inappropriate medications and the health care system. Patients and their families are considered part of the team and are included as an integral part of the program.
The scope and intensity of services varies according to patient needs. Services commonly offered to all persons served include screening assessment, appropriate intervention, education, discharge planning and follow-up.
The program utilized members of the medical staff, nursing services, physical and occupational therapy and psychology services to provide the best possible comprehensive care to the patient.
The Pain Management Center is lead by our medical director Dr. Jeffrey Norton, MD, an anesthesiologist who specializes in the area of pain management. He is joined by three other anesthesiologists who specialize in pain management as well as a team of nurses specially trained in a variety of techniques to manage pain.
The Pain Management Center treats a variety of chronic pain conditions, such as, lower back pain, leg pain, neck and shoulder pain and myofascial pain. We also have experience in treating patients with post herpetic neuralgia, arthritis, neuropathies and nerve injuries. We also perform kyphoplasties in the outpatient setting for acute compression fractures.
Treatment that is offered at the Pain Center include the following:
- Injection therapy - epidural injections, facet injections, nerve blocks, muscle injection, radiofrequency lesioning and kyphoplasty.
- Medication therapy - Anti-inflammatory drugs, muscle relaxers, non-narcotics, seizure medications and antidepressant medications are common medications prescribed and have shown positive effects in treating chronic pain. Narcotic or opioid medications are occasionally used in selected cases.
- Therapies - We work closely with our therapy department at Northeast Rehabilitation Hospital. When appropriate, our physicians will refer you to physical therapy or occupational therapy.
- Psychology services - We have an outpatient psychology department that we can refer to help patients deal with the various emotional and psycho-social issues that can often accompany pain.
All new patients are seen on physician referrals only. The physicians here at the Pain Center will want to review medical notes, any previous treatments, medication list, and any x-rays, MRI's, or other testing you might have had.
