We offer a comprehensive driving assessment program for anyone who has had an illness, injury or age-related decline in skills that could affect the ability to drive safely. Our services are provided by a certified driver rehabilitation specialist and includes both a clinical and an in-car assessment.
The Clinical Assessment
The clinical assessment screens skills that are important for competent driving and include:
- Visual skills
- Cognitive skills
- Physical skills
- Physical and mental reaction skills
- Interpretation of road signs
The In-Car Assessment
This portion of the assessment takes place in a Northeast Rehab training vehicle which is adaptable and has a training brake for safety. The in-car assessment evaluates driving skills, application of traffic rules and regulations, adaptive equipment needs and independence in the community. For beginner drivers, the in-car assessment evaluates their potential to learn the skills necessary for driving.
At the conclusion of the driving assessment, recommendations are made to meet a client’s needs. Possible recommendations include:
- Return to independent driving
- Follow-up driver training sessions to improve driving skills along with training in use of adaptive equipment as indicated
- Therapy to increase functional skills necessary for safe driving
- Driving retirement
Conditions appropriate for this program include but not limited to:
- Head injury
- Spinal cord injury
- Orthopedic injuries
- Neurological diagnosis
- Age-related changes
- Cerebral palsy
- Visual impairment
- Learning disabilities
- Autism spectrum
- Post-polio syndrome
- Guillan-Barre syndrome
A physician referral is required to participate in the program.
