Spasticity Management

Northeast Rehabilitation Spasticity Clinics work with patients and families to provide comprehensive evaluation, education, medical, and procedural management of spasticity, or an abnormal increase in muscle tone or tightness due to a neurological condition, to fit each patient’s individual lifestyle and specific functional goals.  With our unique and comprehensive approach, we work as a team with patients and their caregivers to provide relief from pain, disrupted sleep, impaired mobility and performance of everyday activities, and other symptoms caused by their spasticity.  We provide these services to adults only, and we treat adults who have spasticity due to conditions from childhood, such as cerebral palsy.

Spasticity can be as unique as the individual who has it, and it is for this reason that our approach at Northeast Rehabilitation Hospital is highly individualized and comprehensive. Our physiatrists, specialists in physical medicine and rehabilitation, have specific expertise in the management of spasticity, including procedures such as the use of Botulinum Toxin to reduce painful tightness and spasms in muscles affected by spasticity. Other available techniques include the specialized use of physical, occupational and speech therapies, medications, and management of intrathecal baclofen pumps.

Our distinctive and collaborative environment at Northeast Rehabilitation Hospital allows direct interaction between all members of the rehabilitation team, including physiatrists, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and nursing to provide seamless and comprehensive spasticity care.  Dr. Dmitri Dmytruk and Dr. James Andriotakis treat spasticity at our Salem and Portsmouth locations respectively.

This coordinated team approach, along with addressing each patient’s individual needs and goals, ensures the patient receives the optimal treatment to maximize functional independence and quality of life. This method also allows the team to quickly and effectively address any needs or problems that may arise, make adjustments to current treatment plans, and offer guidance to meet changing lifestyle, symptom, and medication needs.
